Decker agreed to sign a contract to sign a deal with Island/Def Jam after Mercury Records' president David Massey passed her demos to L.A. Reid, head of Island/Def Jam. Jessie James, her moniker for the album she released with that title at the end of August, 2009 was her own self-titled. Jessie James was reasonably successful and also featured Wanted the single which climbed in the Top 40 of the singles charts. Decker always thought of herself as a traditional country artist however, the album's promotion and production was geared towards a more pop-oriented audience. Decker was adamant with the label to get more control of her music after two of her singles fell. Her next release, Boys in the Summer is more country-oriented. Decker's sophomore album, which was announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy or Sweet American Dreams was shelved by Mercury and, after the release of three singles failed on the country charts Decker was let go of her contract.
